A division of the Pathology Department, the Anatomic Pathology team facilitates the high quality collection of study data using a vast array of both well established and novel postmortem and surgical pathology techniques. Consistent quality and reproducibility of our procedures ensures the quality and validity of our study data, supporting mission critical initiatives.

Job Responsibilities:

Using technical and organizational skills, the Anatomic Pathology (AnPath) Specialist will perform varied, unique and novel prosection methods, animal necropsies, and other critical functions as determined by department leadership and study directorship. This individual contributor is responsible for and consulted in the implementation of AnPath techniques and methods as utilized in existing R&D and GLP pipelines.

Use of sound judgment, strong communication and collaboration skills, and the detailed and consistent documentation of research data are paramount to success in this role. The AnPath Specialist is expected to understand and utilize foundational knowledge related to macroscopic evaluation, prosection, anatomy and physiology, or developmental or comparative biology, or related disciplines.

Essential Functions:

• Animal necropsy and macroscopic evaluation, prosection, and dissection of the products of animal necropsy procedures and surgical pathology specimens.
• Documentation of necropsy or macroscopic evaluation findings, or other study data, on the appropriate forms and in compliance with Good Documentation Practices (GDP).
• Primary Anatomic Pathology staff responsible for:
• The organization and maintenance of the necropsy rooms and AnPath spaces in Fremont and Austin. Vetting and maintenance of specimen and reagent inventories.
• Triage, preservation, testing, and archival of various pathology laboratory specimens.
• Proper disposal and documentation of hazardous chemicals and biohazardous waste, and effective related communication with third parties.
• Generate, edit, or review procedural or equipment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and templates or forms.
• Comply with and assist in quality initiatives, including audits and follow-up, site inspections, and process improvements.
• Serve as a point of contact for all postmortem examinations, gross procedures, and macroscopic evaluations.
• Evaluation and reporting of procedural or experimental results in consultation with veterinarians, pathologists and other stakeholders.
• Communicates and partners with cross-disciplinary teams including, but not limited to, engineering, regulatory compliance, scientists, and other professionals.
• Ability to train others in Anatomic Pathology procedures.
• Ability to work off hours and weekends. Ability to travel as needed.
• Other duties as assigned by team leadership or as needed to advance company initiatives.

Key qualifications :

• A minimum of 1 year of related experience with a Bachelor's degree or formal, structured training in biology, anatomy, or related discipline; or related experience.
• Established experience in routine postmortem examination and tissue grossing (trim).
• Carry a working knowledge of anatomy and physiology.
• Experience in identifying gross abnormalities in tissue samples and organs.
• Ability to carry out and document experiments consistently, according to standard operating procedures (SOPs).
• Experience working in a highly regulated laboratory environment.
• Ability to reproducibly capture quality macroscopic images via D-SLR photography or a high throughput pathology imaging system.
• Basic computer skills necessary to complete work onsite or remotely (as needed).
• Capacity to work in a streamlined fashion with a multidisciplinary team, in a dynamic environment. Ability to make detailed observations, analyze data, interpret results, and communicate findings to team members in a clear and concise manner.

Preferred qualifications :

• A minimum of 3 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree or formal, structured training in biology, anatomy, or related discipline; or related experience.
• A strong command of vertebrate or comparative anatomy or biology.
• Established experience in routine postmortem examination, surgical pathology dissection, perfusion, and tissue grossing (trim).
• Familiarity with GSuite applications (E.g., Docs, Sheets, Slides, etc.)
• Experience working in a GLP setting.
