We are seeking a motivated individual with a background in biology, genomics, and programming to support and lead Metagenomi’s NGS based bioinformatics discovery platform. Reporting to the Vice President, Discovery, this position will play a crucial role in designing methods to support the development and usage of Metagenomi’s extensive genome-editing toolbox, including algorithm development, big-data analytics, and pipeline design. This role will be based in Emeryville, CA .
About the Role
By the end of yo ur first year , you will have a chance to demonstrate your ability to:
- Lead a team of bioinformaticians while collaborating closely with lab scientists and engineers to build and maintain complex NGS pipelines
- Develop algorithms and computational infrastructure for gene-editing applications, such as off-target analysis, guide selection, and determining editing outcomes
- Develop UI-based resources, command line tools, and containerized workflows for use by scientists and engineers company wide
- Integrate diverse data sources for improved analysis outcomes and automated pipelines (e.g. from LIMs and other internal databases)
- Design and implement data management best practices throughout the company
- Coordinate and encourage standardized coding best practices, lead and collaborate with team members on code reviews
- Set priorities and directions for lab/NGS data analysis, set up systems that scale, and provide communication on bioinformatics efforts company wide
Desired Qualifications
- PhD in Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, or closely related discipline or equivalent relevant experience
- At least six years of closely related bioinformatics industry experience with at least two years experience in a leadership capacity
- Extensive knowledge of NGS platforms, including their mechanisms and technical limitations
- Experience working with common bioinformatics methods for NGS data analysis (aligners, assemblers, bbmap, BEDtools, FastQC)
- Experience designing, troubleshooting, and optimizing complex NGS based algorithms (UMI consensus calling, RNA-seq, variant calling, analysis of gene editing outcomes, and off target effects)
- Experience with full lifecycle pipeline development
- Expert level proficiency in Python and experience or a strong interest in working with cloud computing systems (e.g. AWS)
- Experience with Docker and building containerized data workflows to handle large scale data streams
- Familiarity with software development practices such as unit testing, code reviews, and version control
Preferred additional qualifications:
- AWS Well-Architected Framework, severless development
- Experience with machine learning applications for complex biological problems (e.g. protein engineering, functional annotation)
- Experience with Nextflow , SQL & NoSQL database design
- Experience building front-end dashboards with Plotly Dash
- Experience creating data mesh architecture solutions for research
- Previous experience generating data in a molecular biology/microbiology laboratory
The anticipated base salary range for this position will be $170,000 - $195,000 depending on the exact level of the role. As this role is open to candidates with a wide range of skills and experience, the exact salary will be dependent on the specific level of the position.
