We are seeking a motivated individual with a background in biology, genomics, and programming to work on the computational aspects of our gene-editing platform. Reporting to a Senior Data Scientist, this position will play a crucial role in designing methods to support the development and usage of Metagenomi’s extensive genome-editing toolbox, including algorithm development, big-data analytics, and pipeline design. This role will be based in Emeryville, CA.

How you’ll contribute:

By the end of yo ur first year , you will have a chance to demonstrate your ability to:

  • Work in concert with software engineers, lab scientists, and data scientists to develop new capabilities for our AWS-based genome-editing platform
  • Develop algorithms and computational infrastructure for gene-editing applications, such as guide selection, and determining editing outcomes
  • Assist lab and discovery scientists with large-scale data analyses
  • Develop NGS analysis pipelines
  • Create tools for streamlining automation processes
  • Develop UI-based resources, command line tools, and containerized workflows for use by scientists and engineers company wide
  • Follow standardized coding and data management best practices throughout the company
  • Lead and collaborate with team members on code reviews


What you bring:

What will enable you to thrive as our new Data Scientist :

  • B.S or M.S. in Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, a related discipline, or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years experience in biotech or related field, preferably working on gene editing systems or a similar biology field
  • Experience building front-end dashboards with Plotly Dash
  • Experience performing bioinformatics analysis and working with scientists to interpret data
  • Expert in python programming
  • Experience interpreting and showing complex data using python based data visualization tools, such as seaborn, plotly, and matplotlib
  • Extensive knowledge of common bioinformatics methods for NGS data analysis (aligners, assemblers, bbmap, BEDtools, FastQC)
  • Able to quickly learn and adopt new software tools
  • Self-motivated, passionate about your work, and eager to continuously learn more
  • Able to communicate effectively across multiple scientific disciplines

Preferred additional qualifications:

    • Understanding of test-driven development and unit testing framework
    • Experience with AWS well-architected framework, severless development
    • Experience with Nextflow
    • Experience with SQL & NoSQL database design
    • Experience or strong interest in working with cloud computing systems (e.g. AWS) Experience with Docker and building containerized data workflows to handle large scale data streams
  • Familiarity with software development practices such as unit testing, code reviews, and version control
  • Experience working with  Hamilton and Echo automation systems
  • Previous experience generating data in a molecular biology/microbiology laboratory setting a plus

California Pay Transparency Disclosure:

This position is classified as an exempt position under the Federal Labor Standards Act.  The anticipated base salary range for this position will be $105,000 - $140,000 .  You will also be eligible to receive equity, bonuses, and a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits depending on the position offered. Please note that individual total compensation for this position will be determined at the Company’s sole discretion and may vary based on location, skill level, years and depth of relevant experience, and education.
