We are seeking a motivated experienced engineer with excellent leadership and communication skills to serve as the Deputy Department Manager for the Advanced Test Systems Department at HRL Laboratories. The Advanced Test Systems Department is an integrated product team of mechanical, electrical, production, integration engineers, and physicists all working together to design and build advanced cryogenic test systems in support of HRL’s world-leading silicon quantum dot technologies. The responsibilities will focus on the following; resource organization across multiple departments, organization of hiring and recruitment, supporting career development of staff including performance management through formal and informal feedback. In addition, the Deputy Department Manager will work closely with the Department Manager and Group Leads in forming strategic planning in improving the engineering culture and process maturity to support higher TRL (Technology Readiness Level) activities/programs. Engineering experience involving management of design reviews, familiarity with configuration management, PLM systems, change control, and project management experience are required.
Essential Duties:
Organizing engineering resources and supporting logistical coordination across multiple departments, and vendors.
Coordination and organization of hiring and recruiting to support programs.
Performance management and career development of staff.
Development and planning of engineering process development.
Manage department finances and space.
Organize and support department communications.
Required Skills:
At least 5 years of leadership experience managing highly trained technical staff.
Demonstrated experience with successful resource allocation and management.
Experience with line management functions, such as writing job requisitions, hiring, and performance reviews.
More than 10 years of experience providing technical contributions on multiple product life cycles in related engineering disciplines.
Experience with design reviews and development of criteria for key gates.
Excellent oral and written communication skills. Have willingness to mentor.
Knowledge of Configuration Management, PDM, PLM, and associated engineering controls.
Willingness to work in a fast-paced environment and ability to work independently.
Required Education:
Minimum BS in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, Applied Physics, or closely related discipline with at least 15 years of industry experience.
Special Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship is required. Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance is required.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $138,000 - $230,000 + bonus + benefits.
