We are seeking an experienced Manufacturing Associate (Upstream), to support manufacturing operations at the pilot plant facility. Reporting to the Manufacturing Manager, this position will have the opportunity to build the pilot plant manufacturing operations, procedures, and tools from the ground up. This person will work with other functions, Process Engineering, Quality Assurance and Control, Facilities, and Logistics within the Technical Operations department. This role will be based in Emeryville, California.

About the Role

  • Perform bacterial cell expansions and aseptic techniques (thaw cell banks and expand bacterial cells in shake flasks)
  • Operate and maintain bioreactors for bacterial fermentation
  • Performs Harvest operations - Cell lysis, centrifugation, and homogenization
  • Perform basic troubleshooting and assists in the review of documentation for assigned functions
  • Assist with or independently performs investigations for any operational and process deviations to implement the appropriate corrective actions.
  • Participate on cross-functional teams and represents their functional area
  • Draft and revise documents such as Manufacturing Procedures, SOPs, and technical reports
  • Collaborate with other departments for raw materials, water, testing requirements, documentation, validation, maintenance, and scheduling
  • Identify the technical, procedural, and equipment issues that hinder production and compliance, and inform support departments and managers as needed.
  • Support the installation and qualification of new equipment
  • Help create and actively support 5S, Area Improvement, and Safety Team initiatives to ensure a Continuous Improvement culture

Desired Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree and at least three years of relevant industry experience
  • Technical proficiency in GMP production
  • Experience with bioreactors, centrifuge, and filter operations
  • Experience with technology transfers and new process introductions
  • The ability to troubleshoot issues, identify root causes and implement effective solutions
  • Drive continuous process improvements in collaboration with the process engineering team
  • Experience with the usage of quality management systems and technical writing
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Extremely organized and able to efficiently manage your time and workflow, including skillfully prioritizing both long-term projects and day-to-day responsibilities
  • Able to quickly learn and adapt to new software tools (Google Suite, Slack)
  • Highly collaborative, team-oriented, and considerate of the needs of others. Thrives in a fast-moving, results-oriented startup environment with urgent deadlines
  • Independent and self-sufficient, but knows when to ask questions or seek support
  • Self-motivated, passionate about your work, and eager to continuously learn more experience with ordering consumables/supplies and tracking inventory

The anticipated base salary range for this position will be $90,000 - $110,000 depending on the exact level of the role. As this role is open to candidates with a wide range of skills and experience, the exact salary will be dependent on the specific level of the position.
