Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
HRL Laboratories works on a technology called "exchange-only silicon dot quantum computers". We build them in-house, study them, and improve them. In order to do that, we need a lot of software.
Internships on the Quantum Software team at HRL Laboratories provide a unique opportunity to work on an impactful, independent R&D project. We typically match an internship project to both your skills and interests, and we try to push you as close as possible to the cutting-edge of what we do.
Successful interns will have unambiguously good skills in programming. Our programming languages of choice are Python, Common Lisp, JavaScript, and C++; though if you can program well in another language, we provide room for you to learn what you need with our stack. The project areas include:
Data Platform: how we manage, handle, and analyze years of experimental data.
Internal Tools: a collect of tools to help us manage our quantum computing systems and processes
Experimental Physics Software: the suite of software our physicists use to perform experiments, measurements, calibrations, and other studies
Optimizing Compiler: the program that converts higher level programs into executable quantum code
Control Software: the firmware of the quantum computer
Quantum experience is not necessary for many internship projects we have in mind! However, strong candidates will have a solid background in computer science, physics, or mathematics.
We accept intern candidates from diverse backgrounds, including those at any stage in their university career.
We hope interns will view HRL Labs as a future employment prospect. If you intern at HRL, you will be able to participate in an expedited interview process with us in the future, should you seek a full-time position.
