We are seeking an innovative and collaborative Scientist to join our Protein Engineering & Optimization team. Reporting to the Director of Protein Engineering, this position will play a crucial role in designing and refining new gene editing tools and helping build new protein engineering capabilities at Metagenomi. You will have the opportunity to make a lasting impact as you partner with the rest of the Discovery scientific teams in order to pioneer novel gene editing systems and enable preclinical development. This role will be based in Emeryville, California.

How you’ll contribute:
- Design and build plasmid constructs and novel protein architectures to optimize the activity and expression of CRISPR nuclease-driven engineered proteins, in collaboration with the Computational Biology and Structure/Function teams
- Apply rational design and directed evolution principles to create and optimize new gene editing tools for higher activity and specificity
- Work with the Automation and Analytics group to run automated workflows to prepare nucleic acid reagents and execute gene editing experiments
- Develop automatable selection methods and high throughput screening assays for engineered proteins in E. coli and mammalian cells with the Functional Assay team
- Prepare accurate and timely data summaries, contribute to writing of reports and patents, and present findings to key stakeholders
- Work with project teams and functional groups to propel early candidates to therapeutic programs
What you bring:
- PhD degree in chemical engineering, biochemistry, bioengineering or a related discipline
- Hands-on experience with molecular cloning techniques, structure-guided protein design, experience in engineering of CRISPR associated proteins
- Experience with mammalian cell transfection and lentiviral transduction
- Hands-on experience in using machine learning algorithm to guide protein design
- Track record of successful implementation of innovative protein engineering approaches
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, highly organized and able to efficiently manage your time and workflow
- Collaborative, team-oriented, and considerate of the needs of others
- Thrives in a fast-moving, results-oriented startup environment with urgent deadlines
- Independent and self-sufficient, self-motivated, and eager to continuously learn more
California Pay Transparency Disclosure:
This position is classified as an exempt salaried position under the Federal Labor Standards Act. The anticipated base salary range for this position will be $115,000 to $145,000. You will also be eligible to receive equity, bonuses, and a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits depending on the position offered. Please note that individual total compensation for this position will be determined at the Company’s sole discretion and may vary based on location, skill level, years and depth of relevant experience, and education.
