General Description:
The Vision Systems Laboratory (VSL) at HRL Laboratories is focused on disruptive electro-optical detector technologies, focal-plane module designs, and vision system architectures.  A highly talented team of scientists and engineers performs innovative research and development in a unique, vertically-integrated manufacturing organization that creates products for the next generation of commercial and government imaging systems.  This position is for a highly innovative leader who can conceptualize, lead, and drive creative research and development thrusts for an expanded infrared detector technology portfolio, in order to address future system needs.

Essential Duties:
The ideal candidate for this position has > 5 years of post-graduate experience in optoelectronic/ photonic device design, epitaxial growth, FPA fabrication, or FPA test.  Experience in infrared detector research and development is a requirement, as evidenced by generation of high-quality scientific publications and technical presentations, and recognition in the IR detector community as a strong contributor.  Deep understanding of semiconductor device physics, including the ability to relate basic material and physical characteristics to device and system performance, is essential.  The candidate will be expected to identify technical areas that can be addressed by novel infrared device designs, innovative semiconductor materials, or advanced fabrication and integration approaches for focal-plane arrays and imaging systems.
The successful candidate will: (1) identify technical areas of strategic value to HRL and owner organizations, (2) develop and maintain relationships with relevant customers, vendors, and collaborating organizations, (3) lead and manage proposal generation and marketing efforts, (4) establish internal technical teams to pursue new business opportunities, and (5) present results in oral presentations at key conferences to highlight VSL’s capabilities in the technical community.

Required Skills:
Proficiency in the use of computers and engineering work stations is required. The ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing, is a key requirement, in order to facilitate effective interaction with customers and colleagues.
An established track record of successfully funded proposals in detector materials or design is desired.

Required Education:
Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Applied Physics, Chemistry, or related field with an emphasis on semiconductor opto-electronics devices

Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $159,000 - $264,000 + bonus + benefits.
