About this opportunity:

The Technical Product Manager, Research is responsible for the ownership of Freenome’s research and development software systems, particularly bioinformatics software pipelines to ensure the platform’s reliability, validity and usability for research - from wet lab to molecular science, development, computational biology, and machine learning initiatives.

You will be responsible for coordinating and prioritizing the needs of the Development Scientists, Computational Biologists and Machine Learning Scientists and working with engineers to manage various systems, services and downstream data. This position requires you to innovate and improve upon the current software infrastructure in place, define new specifications for automation and further strengthen data integrity.

You will also be responsible for strategizing research studies for molecular and translational science with a focus on data flow and technical feasibility.

A detail-oriented approach will be paramount to this role coupled with scientific knowledge and understanding of software development. You will capture user requirements, plan, monitor and execute new software features and improvements. A comprehensive understanding of bioinformatics software pipeline, molecular science, and machine learning is required to perform this role effectively. What you’ll do:

  • Manage development processes, systems and software infrastructure necessary to conduct internal research initiatives
    • Build and maintain new software tools for scientific and machine learning teams
    • Define and ship new internal software systems to increase productivity and integrity across R&D
    • Lead data integrity projects at a cross-functional level from lab to computational biology applications
    • Create product requirement documents (PRDs) and tangible roadmaps for engineering teams
    • Track and drive development and ensure fulfillment of requirements using issue tracking system (e.g., Jira)
    • Facilitate productive interactions between users and engineers to ensure needs are understood and met
  • Strategize discovery and partnership studies with cross functional stakeholders including translational science and molecular science teams with a focus on technical needs
    • Define end to end data flow requirements for studies and lead cross functional feasibility assessment
    • Identify research platform tooling needs, define requirements, and plan development of software to ensure smooth and timely execution of all research and development studies

Must haves:

  • BS in a scientific or quantitative field, with a preference for those with a degree in computational biology or a related field
  • At least 3-5 years of experience in a software development environment as a product manager ; an understanding of molecular science and/or computational biology required
  • Experience leading software development efforts to meet regulated market standards (e.g., FDA or CE-mark)
  • Experienced expert at identification and prioritization of software features
  • The ability to thrive in an ambiguous and highly dynamic environment
  • Demonstrated track record of excelling in a process driven function
  • Demonstration of measurably improving organizational success and processes
  • Demonstration of leading complex trade-off decisions between functions
  • Demonstration of scaling or navigating a new area to become an expert

Nice to haves:

  • Experience in building solutions with a focus on research and development studies in  multiomics, NGS or proteomics
  • Direct experience with technical or laboratory operations, medical affairs, or clinical study operations from a diagnostics perspective
  • A data-driven and structured approach to facilitate decision making
  • Self-learner to navigate varying stakeholder needs along the development process (clinical studies to product launch)
  • Expert in design control and product development process
  • Exceptionally organized and process-driven

Benefits and additional information:

The US target range of our base salary for new hires is $136,000 - $210,000 . You will also be eligible to receive pre-IPO equity, cash bonuses, and a full range of medical, financial, and other benefits dependent on the position offered.  Please note that individual total compensation for this position will be determined at the Company’s sole discretion and may vary based on several factors, including but not limited to, location, skill level, years and depth of relevant experience, and education.
