Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
The Mixed Signal Solutions department at HRL Laboratories is a highly talented team of scientists and engineers with diverse backgrounds in integrated circuit design, advanced packaging, novel signal processing and algorithm development, and characterization of highly complex digital and mixed signal systems and subsystems for commercial and government applications in an innovative research and development environment. As a member of the team, you will focus on the thermal and mechanical solutions to help transition the innovative concepts into prototype hardware.
Essential Duties:
Provide thermal modeling solutions for high performance semiconductor packages and optimize design scheme/floor-planning to ensure good thermal mechanical performance. Work cross-functionally with other domain experts (e.g. system architects, hardware engineers, electrical/RF engineers) to design thermal and mechanical experiments and simulations in support of the development of highly advanced mixed signal prototypes. Present details of work to colleagues during design reviews, and provide written summaries of work performed as needed (e.g. for reports and internal documentation).
Required Skills:
Experience with CAD design (e.g. Solidworks), FEM analysis, analytical, and numerical methods for solving real-world 1D, 2D, and 3D heat flow and mechanical (e.g. stress/strain) problems. Experience conducting thermal model analysis, correlating experimental results to model predictions, and proposing solutions to resolve assembly and reliability challenges. Strong experimental background with experience designing and developing custom hardware fixtures for thermal and mechanical testing in environments with large temperature swings.
Training/background in mechanical and thermal design and related analysis, including theory of heat flow, stress/strain analysis, failure analysis, relevant material properties. Hands-on experience using industry analytical simulation tool such as ANSYS Mechanical, ANSYS IcePak, COMSOL, or other thermal FEA tools. Strong mix of technical breadth and depth in the fields of heat transfer, thermodynamics, material science, two-phase thermophysics, and thermal engineering, is desired but not required.
Physical Requirements:
Proficiency in use of computers, engineering workstations, complex electronic equipment, oral and written communication, interaction with vendors/colleagues and willingness to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. Ability to work well in a team and independently. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within confined spaces and have both visual and hearing acuity.
Required Education:
MS in Mechanical Engineering or Material Science or related scientific discipline with 5+ years of industry experience.
Special Requirements:
U.S. citizenship is required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance. Active SSBI is a plus.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $87,000 - $145,000 + bonus + benefits.
