Based in Southern California with locations in Malibu, Calabasas and Camarillo; HRL has been on the leading edge of technology, conducting pioneering research and advancing the state of the art.
In this role, you will be joining the Materials and Microsystems Laboratory. Our mission is to push the frontiers of devices, structures, and materials with applications such as hypersonics, electronics, MEMS, aerospace, and automotive thermal management, often through additive manufacturing. This position is for design, modeling, simulation, and testing of thermal management components and systems. Opportunities abound for a self-driven and creative engineer to grow within our group.
Essential Duties:
•Innovate new approaches, processes, and designs to address challenges in heat transfer and fluid dynamics and push well beyond the limits of current technology.
•Lead the development of novel thermal management components.
•Be a thermal management focal on teams developing aerospace and automotive systems, payloads, and/or platforms.
•Work closely with internal colleagues and external team members to reach program goals.
•Plan and execute analytical and computational analysis and modeling.
•Plan, coordinate, and execute thermal management test campaigns.
•Communicate with other team members, management, and project sponsors via oral presentations, written reports, and journal publications.
•Document inventions and support the patent process.
•Attend and present at conferences.
•Write research proposals.
•Work effectively on a team as well as independently.
Required Skills:
•Detailed knowledge of heat transfer and fluid dynamics.
•Experience with Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics.
•Experience with thermal testing.
•Experience in scientific communication through technical presentations and journal publications.
•Experience planning, conducting, and analyzing experiments.
•Experience with COMSOL Multiphysics, or other commercial Finite Element Analysis software for thermal, thermal-fluid, and thermo-structural modeling.
•CAD Experience (e.g. Solidworks or Inventor)
•Experimental laboratory experience.
•Experience coordinating and executing testing at large, unique test facilities.
•Experience with Matlab or Python
•Experience with structural FEA (e.g. ABAQUS) is a plus
•Scientific understanding of heat transfer, mass transfer, and fluid dynamics.
•Scientific understanding of highly compressible flow is a plus.
•Scientific understanding of supersonic & hypersonic flow and heat transfer is a plus
•Knowledge of Design for Additive Manufacturing
•Knowledge of Additive Manufacturing processes and materials
Required Education:
Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related discipline. Candidates with additional experience may be considered for more advanced positions.
Physical Requirements:
Must be able to work for extended periods while standing or sitting at a computer workstation. Must be familiar with safe chemical handling practices and common laboratory safety procedures. Must be sufficiently mobile to work within a laboratory environment. Ability to work independently is required.
Special Requirements:
U.S. citizenship or Permanent Resident status required. Ability to obtain and maintain a US Government security clearance is a plus.
Compensation:
The base salary range for this full-time position is $104,000 - $174,000 + bonus + benefits.
