Trust & Safety Operations Manager

Openai in San Francisco, California, United States

$175,000 - $220,000

About the Team

The Applied AI Team’s purpose is to commercialize OpenAI’s technology in a manner that leads to broadly beneficial Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) - in particular, by gaining practical experience in deploying these technologies safely. Within Applied AI, Trust and Safety’s mission is to define acceptable uses of OpenAI’s technology; establish detection and response systems to ensure that technology is not used in unsafe ways and to advance the set of use-cases that OpenAI can safely permit.

In 2020, we introduced GPT-3 as the first technology on the OpenAI API, allowing developers to integrate its ability to understand and generate natural language into their product. In 2021, we launched Copilot , powered by Codex , in partnership with GitHub, a new product that can translate natural language to code. In April 2022, we introduced DALL-E 2 , AI that creates images from text, and in November 2022 we introduced ChatGPT .

About the Role

As an Operations Manager on the Trust and Safety team, you will design and implement processes that help keep our products safe. As a member of our Scaled Enforcement subteam, you will develop deep expertise of our usage policies and the commercial applications of our technology in order to drive iterative improvements to our policies and processes.

In this role, you will work closely with stakeholders across the company to understand risks with new products, features, or harm types and translate them into scalable safety systems that leverage both automation and manual reviews. • Be the subject matter expert on OpenAI’s usage policies
  • Review content and organizations that violate our policies, and improve our risk mitigation systems
  • Collaborate with engineering, policy, and research teams to improve our tooling, policies and understanding of harm types

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have a pragmatic approach to being on an operations team and can get in the weeds to get stuff done
  • Are passionate about AI and are keen to take a part in shaping the safety of this technology
  • Have a principled approach to developing processes and metrics
  • Can identify and drive areas of continuous improvement
  • Have a knack for data and use metrics to drive your decision making
